Thomas Hardy wrote the novel “In the Land of the Woods” in a little over a year - from November to February 1887. The novel takes the reader to the very depths of rural England. The village of Maly Hintok - the setting of the novel - is so small that it is even difficult to find it in the thicket of the forest region, but it is here that the tragedies of “truly Sophoclean greatness” are played out. The cause of these tragedies is the clash of natural human characters preserved in the wilderness of rural England.
