In Soviet times, every schoolchild knew the names of Egorov and Kantaria - Heroes of the Soviet Union, who fought their way to the roof of the Reichstag and hoisted the Victory Banner there. However, there was also a third direct participant in this great event - senior lieutenant Alexei Berest, who was bypassed for the award. The story of his military journey is similar to an adventure novel, but his merits were forgotten. His post-war biography is very reminiscent of the biography of the legendary submarine commander Alexander Marinesko - forgotten, slandered, imprisoned on false charges.
