We have before us a text equal in volume to “War and Peace,” while encompassing not one, but three whole universes. Firstly, the pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg Conservatory, associated with it a vast circle of advanced and not very advanced artistic youth, the undisputed leader of which is the hero and diarist Sergei Prokofiev. Secondly, Prokofiev’s Diary contains sketches of artistic countries abroad - America, Western Europe, artistic emigrant circles, the most interesting among which the composer seems to be those associated with S. P. Diaghilev’s “Russian Ballets”. If the narrative of the first world coincides with the years of Prokofiev’s intellectual and creative formation, then in the second he appears as an absolutely mature and independent person and artist, having long outgrown the opinions of the majority, including the officially “advanced” clique, which he mocks at best, at worst, he simply ignores her. Finally, the third world is the early Soviet reality, to which the composer, who often comes to his homeland from abroad, but still constantly lives with his family in Paris, looks closely with constant curiosity, looking in it, according to his philosophical turn of mind, for a synthesis of experiences “primarily” (St. Petersburg) and “encore” (abroad).
