During the second wave of that revival, in 1740-41, Jonathan Edwards visited the town of Enfield and preached what has been called the most famous sermon ever spoken from the Bible. It was called "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," based on Deuteronomy 32:35. Here is a testimony from that day: “While people in neighboring towns were experiencing great mental suffering for their souls, the local residents of this town felt safe, free and at ease. The lecture was scheduled for Enfield; and the people from the neighboring places were so impressed by the carelessness of the locals, and filled with fear, that God, in His righteous judgment, passed by them, while the divine rain fell around them, prostrated before Him, imploring mercy for their souls. When the time appointed for the lecture arrived, there were many ministers from neighboring places, and some came from far away. When they entered the house, the crowd looked carefree and at ease. People barely showed each other common courtesy. Preached by Jonathan Edwards. His direct and simple manner, both in language and in delivery, and his established reputation for holiness and knowledge of the truth did not allow the suspicion with which his listeners were accustomed to greet everyone to prevail. He began in the clear, careful, demonstrative style of a teacher, eager to obtain the result of his efforts and anxious that every step of his argument be clear and fully intelligible. His text was Deuteronomy 32:35, “Vengeance and recompense are mine, when their foot fails; For the day of their destruction is near; the thing prepared for them will soon come.” As the text's meaning progressed, its careful logic led listeners to consequences that even the wildest imagination could not have imagined. His extremely gruesome descriptions of doom and horror for the unrepentant only helped them understand more clearly the truths he encouraged them to believe. The effect was unexpected. Before the meeting was over, the people were deeply impressed and bowed down under the powerful conviction of their sin and horror. The people experienced such suffering and crying that the preacher had to call for silence so that he could be heard. This was the beginning of that very great and powerful cause in that place, for which it was worth coming to this colony.”
