“Summer on the Street of the Prophets” is the first novel in David Shahar’s lyrical epic “The Hall of Broken Vessels,” the main character of which is Jerusalem. It is difficult to find books in Israeli literature that are as inextricably linked with the soul and living flesh of this unique city as the books of Shahar, who were awarded not only Israeli literary prizes for them, but also the Medici and Commander of the French Ordre des Arts awards - the highest awards in France awarded for works foreign literature. Behind the realistic narrative, other plans and secret meanings are revealed to the attentive reader, rooted in the Kabbalistic tradition, in the mystical-symbolic vision of the world. In reality, Jerusalem is such a complex spatio-temporal conglomerate - at the same time a really tangible and elusively ghostly city, not amenable to generalizations and not subject to general laws.
