This book is the first domestic biography of the greatest sultan of the Ottoman Empire, whose reign went down in history as the “Magnificent Century.” In the West they called him that: Suleiman the Magnificent, and in the Islamic world they call him Kanuni (the Just). It was he who turned the Sublime Porte into the most powerful empire of the East, having conquered Bosnia and Herzegovina, Transylvania and Moldova, Iraq and Georgia, Rhodes and Libya, Sudan and Ethiopia, he waged a victorious war against a coalition of the strongest monarchies in Europe, took Belgrade and Buda, defeated Hungary (the Magyar king, who fled from the battlefield, drowned in a swamp), more than once defeated the Portuguese and Venetians at sea, invaded Bavaria, besieged Vienna, and proud Austria paid him tribute. Suleiman I became famous not only as a great conqueror, but also as an unsurpassed builder, under whom the main architectural masterpieces of Istanbul were erected, and as a wise legislator, who ensured justice, order and prosperity for his people. And the story of his love for the legendary Roksolana became the plot of many novels and the popular television series “The Magnificent Century.”
