The book tells about the tragic fate of the Ski Jaeger Battalion, which consisted of Norwegian front-line fighters and fought during the Second World War in Karelia on the side of the Germans and Finns. University of Bergen history professor Stein Ugelvik Larsen describes in detail the final battle on two strong points - the Kaprolat and Hasselman heights - in which Soviet troops defeated a Norwegian battalion in June 1944. Professor Larsen takes the material for the book from archives, memoirs and stories of front-line soldiers who survived the war. Much of this was confirmed during the joint Russian-Norwegian search expedition at the site of the death of the Norwegian battalion, where what was left of the defensive positions was found, and the remains of Soviet soldiers and Norwegian front-line soldiers who died there were also discovered. The book presents excerpts from the diaries and memoirs of the front-line soldiers themselves. The description of the same events as they are presented allows us to more comprehensively recreate the picture of what happened, to learn about the reasons that brought these young Norwegians to the battalion. We will learn about how the fates of the front-line soldiers who escaped and returned from captivity, who were in social disgrace in the first years of post-war Norway, developed.
