A 1995 scientific study showed that the speech environment surrounding a baby in the first three years of life determines his future learning trajectory. Boys and girls in homes where parents talk to them a lot are better prepared for school, have a larger vocabulary, read better, and are even stronger in math. Professor and pediatric surgeon Dana Susskind and her colleagues developed the Thirty Million Words program, which integrates the theory with practice and gives parents scientifically based and easily applicable recommendations on how to communicate with kids.
