We live in a world much more turbulent than we would like to think, but the science we use to analyze economic, financial and statistical processes or phenomena largely ignores the important chaotic component of the nature of the universe. We need to get used to the idea that extremely unlikely events are also part of the natural order of things. The eminent Hungarian mathematician and psychologist László Mérö explains how two worlds, “wild” and “quiet” (which he calls Diconia and Tichonia), coexist and shows that they have different laws. He argues that although the Universe in which we live is essentially wild, we are better off considering it to be subject to the laws of Quietness. This notion can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, creating an island of predictability in the middle of an extremely stormy sea. Reviewing the precarious boundaries between economics and complexity theory, Méreux proposes to extend the scope of the exact sciences to what has heretofore been considered beyond scientific analysis: those unpredictable, unique, highly improbable phenomena that we usually call miracles. If you accept invitation by László Mérö, you will find yourself in a world where miracles are the norm, and the predictable lives side by side with the unpredictable. Along the way, he reveals the secrets of the mathematics of stock markets and explains vividly, but mathematically precisely, the causes of stock market crashes and earthquakes, and also explains why “black swans” should be seen not only as disasters, but also as opportunities. (Albert-László Barabási, physicist, world expert on network theory)
