The collection of works by the English writer H.G. Wells includes his best science fiction novels, which have become a kind of calling card of the author and a classic of “warning literature”: “The Time Machine” (1895) is a gloomy story about the life of mankind in the sample 802701, “ The Island of Doctor Moreau" (1896) and "The Invisible Man" (1897) are stories about amazing experiments carried out by brilliant and mad scientists who daringly violate the laws of nature, legal prohibitions and moral norms, and "War of the Worlds" (1897) is one from the first books on the topic of alien aggression, popular in later literature and cinema, threatening the existence of humanity. "When the Sleeper Awake" (1898-1899) and "The First Men in the Moon" (1901) are examples of Wells's social fiction, in which various negative models of social order are played out (be it a lunar hierarchical "anthill" society ruled by the Great Lunarius, or totalitarian regime established by the White Council on Earth at the end of the 21st century) and the possibility of changing them.
