The issue opens with the novel “Heat and Dust” by the Anglo-American writer and screenwriter Ruth Priver Jhabvala (1927–2013). The action takes place in India, alternately - either quite recently or in 1923. The heroine and narrator, our contemporary, having moved to India, appears as if in two dimensions: she lives her own present life and, at the same time, the youth of her grandfather’s first wife, who left him for an impoverished Indian prince. Both the main and secondary English characters experience the mysterious spell of India.
