History increasingly appears to us as a series of catastrophes. They are most often represented by “before and after” photographs that need to be compared: two photographs of the same place, taken at different times, before and after a destructive event. Buildings that appear intact in the “before” photograph turn into ruins in the “after” photograph. In one photo, life is seething; in another, the same place lies in ruins or hidden under a layer of rotting water. Deforestation, environmental pollution, melting icebergs and drying up rivers - all this presents us with paired photographs, the task of which is to demonstrate the consequences of the malicious invasion of nature by progress, the exploitation of resources, wars or climate change. It seems that any photo taken today has the potential to become a before photo of that devastating after that is yet to come.
