Pushkin's duel is still shrouded in myths and legends. The classic work of the famous Pushkin scholar Pavel Shchegolev (1877-1931) contains documents and evidence that clarify the history of the clash and duel between Pushkin and Dantes. In his book, the researcher set the goal, in his words, “throwing aside all unverified and unreliable reports, to give a coherent construction of factual events." “The mental state in which Pushkin was in the last months of his life,” wrote P.E. Shchegolev, was the result of a wide variety of circumstances. Matters: material, literary, magazine, family; relations with the emperor, with the government, with high society, etc. had a grave impact on Pushkin’s state of mind. Of the long series of these circumstances, we considered it necessary—for our purposes—to touch only on Pushkin’s family relations—the immediate cause of the fatal collision.”
