The popular Venezuelan writer Francisco Herrera Luque is one of the most interesting contemporary masters of the historical novel. It would seem that “The Moon of Doctor Faustus” is dedicated to a local event from a historical perspective - the conquest of Venezuela by the conquistadors, but the main thing in this novel is the close interweaving of the historical and mythological outline. Reviving the seemingly obsolete genre of the medieval “chivalrous romance”, Luque proves himself to be a subtle psychologist and a brilliant stylist. He writes the history of the conquest of America as a fascinating book, in which a bizarre mixture of fantasy and reality has a strictly documentary basis.
