“Burnt Sugar” is a story about love, misunderstanding and betrayal. But not between lovers, but between mother and daughter. Avni Doshi raises a sensitive and painful topic, which is still partly taboo in society. The main characters are separated by years and completely different life experiences, but are united by an unbreakable natural connection, which ultimately becomes destructive for them.
Avni Doshi is a true cosmopolitan. An ethnic Indian, she was born in the US state of New Jersey and now lives in Dubai. Burnt Sugar is her debut novel, which has been published in more than 20 countries and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. A film adaptation of the book is planned.
“Avni Doshi spent seven years writing her first novel, which was nominated for the Booker Prize. Congratulations. A good start". — Euronews “Avni Doshi is not just a talented writer, she is a creator. Her phrases are sharp and incredibly precise. This is a story without embellishment." — New York Times Review "Delightful and sophisticated, you can't put it down." — Observer “A disturbing debut, striking in its venom and disarming in its humor.” — Guardian
