Walsh noted that all world religions, to one degree or another, recommend that their followers develop a number of common qualities and offer appropriate developmental practices for this. That is, some psychological practices seem to have the status of universality. Walsh counted seven such universal developmental practices, the objects of application of which are: 1. motivational sphere (aspirations, attractions, attachments, desires), 2. emotional sphere (passion, love, compassion), 3. moral sphere (good, evil), 4. ability to control the mind (concentration, peace), 5. capacity for awareness, 6. ability to understand (wisdom) and7. the ability to effectively convey experience (service). Walsh described these practices, devoting a separate section to each of them; at the end of the section there are exercises for better mastery of the material. The book can be recommended as a textbook, that is, a text that provides students with systematically presented information about a certain subject - in this case, about traditional practices of self-development - making it visible and accessible for further meaningful study.
