The title of this book requires some explanation. No, not the name of Hitler - it, unfortunately, is being heard again. But not everyone will remember what a directory is. This is a legacy of DOS, the disk operating system, as it called the folder for storing files. It was then, at the dawn of the computer era, that the writer Elena Syanova began filling her “Hitler_directory” with materials. She was among the few historical researchers allowed to work with documents from the captured archive of the German General Staff. And since, in addition to German, she also speaks English, French, Spanish and Italian, the directory was quickly filled with unique materials. Then it grew into four novels about the birth and collapse of German fascism, and a book of essays, “Ten from Hitler’s Deck” (Time, 2006). In Elena Syanova's new documentary book, the circle of historical figures becomes even wider, and the circumstances in which they act become even more interesting and unexpected.
