Based on the books of Abram Tertz (Andrei Sinyavsky) “Walking with Pushkin” and “In the Shadow of Gogol”, the work examines the main storytelling strategies implemented by the writer-philologist-experimentalist. The authors demonstrate that Tertsev’s narration is not just mediated by the techniques of canonical “philological prose”, but also deserves the close attention of philologists, Pushkin scholars and Gogol scholars. The markers of Sinyavsky-Tertz’s analytical discursiveness are the characterological signs of strict scientific research: compositional division, putting forward research goals and objectives, illuminating the history of the issue, choosing an analysis methodology, etc., but the main thing is that Terts-Sinyavsky has a lively and unconventional approach to the perception of the works of Pushkin and Gogol and offers unexpected interpretations, demonstrates sharpness of thought and freshness of view. The experience of Sinyavsky, a research scientist who defended his dissertation at Moscow State University, worked at the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, lectured at Moscow State University and the Moscow Art Theater Studio, gave birth to a unique philological research, extraordinary and thought-intensive. Tertz’s “free” style of presentation serves as an effective means of resolving pressing issues in Russian Pushkin studies and modern Gogol studies; the writer-researcher’s thought attracts attention with its originality and sharpness.
