Near the Cape Cod Peninsula, the disaster overtook two tankers, the Fort Mercer and the Pendleton. Having discovered a leak, the crew of the Fort Mercer sent a distress signal. The report said the tanker was breaking up. In the midst of the storm, the Coast Guard, using wooden motor boats, went to rescue the crew of two oil tankers.
