This is a story about New York in the 1950s, about girls whose "gloves, like the night, are getting longer." Lucia Sartori, the beautiful daughter of a successful grocer of Italian origin, gets a job as an assistant to a fashion designer at the luxurious B. Altman store, located in the heart of New York, on Fifth Avenue. She is engaged to her childhood friend, Dante De Martino, who is devoted to her. But, having met a beautiful stranger who promises Lucia a luxurious life, known to her only from the pages of gossip columns, the girl breaks up with Dante. Faced with the choice between her responsibilities to her family and her own desires, Lucia tries to find herself. As sophisticated as the dresses Lucia makes and tense as the relationships in her Italian family, the story of a young woman who believes that in a world full of possibilities, she cannot - she simply does not have the right - not to follow her dream.
