Longlisted for the Booker Prize. A hilarious and very British nesting doll novel about the crazy world of psychiatry in the 1960s. “I decided to write down everything that happens now because I feel like I’m putting myself in danger,” writes a young woman , investigating her sister's suicide. Having invented for herself the alter ego of a charismatic and mentally unstable girl named Rebecca Smith, she makes an appointment with the notorious psychotherapist Collins Brathwaite. She suspects that it was Brathwaite who pushed her sister to commit suicide, and begins to keep a diary, where she records the details of her communication with the psychotherapist. However, faced with the contradictory, mysterious, and in some places completely charlatan world of psychiatry of the 60s, the heroine begins to strongly doubt not only in her methods, but also in her own mind.
