The trilogy of Mark Kharitonov (b. 1937) “Provincial Philosophy” is published in Russian for the first time in one book. It includes the novels “Prokhor Menshutin” (1971, published in 1988), “Provincial Philosophy” (1977, published in 1993), “Lines of Fate, or Milashevich’s Chest” (1980-1985, Russian Booker Prize, 1992). All three books are connected by common characters, a common location, the provincial towns of Nechaysk and Stolbenets, a common ongoing plot, “a quiet but powerful breath of unquenchable passion” (Andrei Nemzer). The trilogy was published in its entirety only in French on the initiative of the outstanding Slavist Professor Georges Nive, who noted “the inimitable flavor that is felt in all the works of the great writer.” Separate parts of the trilogy were also published in English, Czech and Chinese.
