The Story of Iqbal is a novel about the life of Iqbal Masih, a Pakistani boy who was forced into slavery and became an activist and human rights activist. Iqbal is a twelve-year-old who knew that his life was worth more than the most beautiful carpet, that endless lines of children toiling endlessly at machines were wrong, and that there was a way to stop the violence. He was killed in 1995 at the age of twelve. The story of Iqbal Masih is told from the perspective of Fatima, a Pakistani girl whose life is changed by Iqbal's courage. For Fatima and the other children from Hussein Khan's carpet factory, the appearance of a die-hard teenager was the start of something new. It was Iqbal who made them understand that their family's debt would never be repaid, no matter how many inches of carpet they weaved in a day, how neat their work was, or how perfect the design. And it was Iqbal who helped them see the future. “Fatima, when I return,” he said then, “we will fly a kite every day!” “The Story of Iqbal” was translated into many languages and became a bestseller in countries from the United States to Japan, from France to Korea. She was awarded numerous awards: Cassa di Risparmio di Centro (2002), La ciliegia d'oro - Terre del Magnifico (2002), Piccoli lettori crescono, Piero Manni (2002), Un libro per la testa (2003), Christopher Awards ( 2004) and was included in the American Library Association's Choice list (2004).
