Should my child be vaccinated and if so, why? The answers to these questions are still not obvious to many parents. American pediatrician, infectious disease specialist and one of the creators of the rotavirus vaccine, Paul Offit, poses the question more harshly: should parents be given the right to make such a choice? The result of mass refusals to vaccinate has been the return of epidemics of almost forgotten diseases: whooping cough, measles, meningitis. In an effort to protect children from the side effects of vaccines, adults are succumbing to mass hysteria based on anecdotal evidence and emotional reactions. In his book, Offit analyzes several anti-vaccination campaigns and brilliantly refutes the arguments of their activists, arguing that the decision not to vaccinate a child can be deadly. On the side of reason are science, medical practice and the century and a half history of universal vaccination.
