The published chronicle is the main work of Lambert, a monk from the Benedictine abbey of Hersfeld, in which he outlined the history from the Creation of the World to 1039, in the form of dry excerpts from previous chronicles; and starting from this year, the author’s contemporary history is presented in increasing detail, especially the history of Germany before 1077. In terms of pure language and mastery of presentation, Lambert belongs to the best writers of the Middle Ages. Lambert’s chronicle contains a number of interesting information about Kievan Rus: valuable evidence from earlier annals about the embassy of Princess Olga to Otto I has been preserved, there is unique data about the foreign policy side of the struggle between Izyaslav and Svyatoslav Yaroslavich and about the former’s trip to Germany. This is the first complete translation of the chronicle into Russian language. For a wide range of history buffs.
