It’s a strange question, the reader will say; Jeanne was long ago forgiven and canonized; a lot of books have been written about her - both pious and “conspiracy”, where they suggest that she was not burned and subsequently lived under a different name. But the “phenomenon of Joan of Arc” remains incomprehensible. The amazingly powerful spiritual impulse that carried her away to military feat, contrary to all the customs of her time, is associated with what, in fact, is called mysticism: this is extra-church communication with invisible forces that exceed human understanding. This communication, which gave the modest girl iron willpower and unshakable determination, involuntarily arouses in many people mistrust and suspicion of heresy, or sinful obsession. Or maybe there really is some connection here with spiritual movements that were called heretical, from the point of view of the official authorities of that time?
