Book by Colonel, Candidate of Military Sciences Yu.B. Ripenko is dedicated to the bright fate of the Chief Marshal of Artillery, Hero of the Soviet Union Sergei Sergeevich Varentsov, who is now unfairly forgotten. His life included a triumphant rise through the ranks, the pinnacle of the art of controlling large masses of artillery during the Great Patriotic War, a significant contribution to the post-war development of missile forces and artillery equipped with nuclear weapons, and a dramatic time of undeserved disgrace. In 1963, for personal connections with the traitor O. Penkovsky and “loss of vigilance” S.S. Varentsov was removed from the post of commander of the missile forces and artillery of the Ground Forces, demoted in rank, and stripped of the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and all orders. For almost three decades, the name of this prominent military leader with extensive front-line experience was consigned to oblivion, and the true circumstances of his resignation remained unclear to his contemporaries. The author of the first biographical work about S.S. Varentsov, using extensive documentary material, including the Marshal’s family archive, fills this gap and contributes to the restoration of his honest name, focusing in this book on the activities of the military leader during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war period.
