Christopher Hampton earned a reputation as a young genius at the age of eighteen by writing a play that became a hit in London's West End. He has written a large number of his own plays, as well as translations and adaptations of such classic masterpieces as Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, Ibsen's Hedda Gabler and Moliere's Don Juan. His play Dangerous Liaisons, based on the novel by Choderlos de Laclos, was performed in the West End more than two thousand times, and for the film adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons directed by Stephen Frears, he received an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
