Arie Woodka was born in Ukraine in 1947. In 1969, a Ryazan student was arrested and sentenced to 7 years under political article 70. In addition to pretrial prison and transfers, he was in the 19th zone in Mordovia, in the 36th zone in the Perm region and in the Vladimir Central. In 1976, he completed his term and repatriated to Israel. He worked mainly in the electronics industry, and later as a teacher of Hebrew, TANAKH and Israeli literature. Writer and publicist. The book “Moscow Region” is a unique document comparable to Shalamov’s prose. A book about people remaining human in the inhuman conditions of the Soviet penitentiary system during the Brezhnev era. But the book is also relevant because it reveals the roots of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, almost forty years ago, and Russia’s desire to seize the Middle East. A special feature of the book are the drawings of the author’s fellow prisoner, artist Viktor Boguslavsky.
