Daniel Woodrell was born and lives in Missouri, where most of his books take place (he defines their genre as “country noir”). Having dropped out of school, he went to serve in the Marine Corps, then graduated from the university. He has published eight books, two of which have been filmed: in 1999, Ang Lee, the author of such hits as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain, based on Woodrell’s novel, directed the revisionist western Chasing with the Devil, and in 2010 It’s the turn of “Winter’s Bone.” Debra Granik's independent, low-budget film became a box office hit and collected an impressive bouquet of prizes and nominations: the Berlin Film Festival, Sundance, Golden Globe and many others. Jennifer Lawrence, who was nominated for an Oscar for her leading role in Winter's Bone, again thundered throughout the world in the spring of 2012 as the star of the post-apocalyptic blockbuster The Hunger Games. But it was in “Winter’s Bone” that she studied survival. The heroine of Woodrell’s novel is another classic image in the gallery of strong women of world literature, a worthy heir to Mattie Ross from “True Grit” by Charles Portis and Little Eye Finch from “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. She will stop a galloping horse, and enter a burning hut, and teach squirrels how to skin. What should 17-year-old Rea Dolly do when she has a crazy mother and two younger brothers in her arms, and her unlucky father, released from prison on bail, has gone on the run? The local sheriff informs her that if her father does not appear in court, her family's house, which, it turns out, is put up as collateral, will be taken away from her family. Going in search of her father, who, according to rumors, has already died, Rea will stop at nothing and endure any ordeal... For the first time in Russian.
