Director Robert Sturua gained fame primarily as an interpreter of Shakespeare and Brecht. The play “Caucasian Chalk Circle” can be called a key turning point in his career: the production became a real triumph for Sturua and brought him world fame. Olga Maltseva in her book chooses this point in the director’s creative biography as a starting point for studying his poetics. How is the Sturua Theater structured in terms of composition? What is unique about his artistic language? What role does the viewer play in his performances? And is Sturua’s creative method close to Brecht’s theater? The author of the monograph seeks answers to these questions by drawing on his own audience experience and consistently analyzing the director’s productions at the Georgian State Theater named after. Shota Rustaveli from “Caucasian Chalk Circle” to “Vano and Niko”. Olga Maltseva – Doctor of Art History, leading researcher at the Russian Institute of Art History, professor at the Department of Russian Theater at the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts, author of works on the poetics of theater in the second half of the 20th – early 21st centuries.
