Nikolai Bolgov focuses on the fate of women in the postclassical world, in which Antiquity and Christianity met. Byzantium of the 4th–6th centuries in secular life still largely preserved the classical cult of the beautiful human, especially female, body, but Christian theologians were already waging an uncompromising and quite successful fight against nudity, which incites lust. There were radical changes in morality that affected literally everything. Resorting to secular and ecclesiastical sources, the author tells how the peaceful proximity of Christian asceticism and ancient freedom of morals was reflected in the everyday way of life of Byzantine women - about how they lived, loved, and raised children. Along the way, a lot of interesting things are reported about the life and personal lives of women of different strata - hetaeras, nuns and representatives of the nobility. Nikolai Bolgov is an antiquarian and Byzantinist, Doctor of Historical Sciences, professor at Belgorod State National Research University.
