The study “The Devil in Everyday Life, Legends and Literature of the Middle Ages” stands apart in the work of the most popular writer of the Silver Age, Alexander Amfitheatrov (1862–1938). Starting from the book “The Devil” by Italian professor Arturo Graf, who focused on theological literature, Amphiteatrov went significantly further than his original source. He made an attempt to study the life of the devil in human consciousness throughout the cultural space of the Middle Ages - from the moment at the dawn of Christianity his detailed biography was formed, until the days when the idea that gave him life had almost become obsolete. Brilliant erudition allowed Amfitheatrov to attract not only Western, but also Russian sources, use mythology, etc. He sets out the genealogy of Satan, talks about his physiology and psychology, describes the devil's temptations, intrigues and obsessions, touches on the intricacies of demonic magic, gives the floor to those who have been in hell to eyewitnesses and provides details of the clergy’s struggle with the devil.
