The action begins with the arrival of a German scientist in the city, hiding from the atrocities he committed and intending to commit new ones in a city mansion turned into a laboratory. The German is interested in everyone's favorite person who lives across the street. Her younger brother and his friends are trying to counteract this relationship. A young man comes to town to pick up a German and has a personal account with him. The main character's friend falls in love with the young man and has the goal of getting married. A series of disappearances and a villainous murder occur in the city. Children find out exactly how people disappear, and they themselves find themselves in the thick of things. They are rescued in an unusual way.
