In European literature, the travelogue genre has occupied a central place since the very beginning of modern times. This book offers a wide range of new readings of Russian travelogues of the first third of the 20th century, covering the works of A. Chekhov, V. Rozanov, M. Tsvetaeva, O. Mandelstam, A. Bely, V. Shklovsky, I. Ehrenburg, G. Ivanov, M. Gorky, A. Platonov. The main attention is paid to travelogues within the borders or on the borders of the Soviet empire, but those that deal with the impressions of Russian writers in Western Europe are also presented. The title “Fugitive Views,” on the one hand, implies the historical state of flight into which people were plunged as a result of the First World War, the October Revolution and the Civil War in Russia, on the other hand, it emphasizes the aesthetic and poetological “fluency” of modernist travelogues, their associative and connotative potential. This is how a new image of the travelogue genre and its evolution in Russian literature arises.
