Mario Conde, a former police officer turned private detective and rare book hunter, is the hero of a series of novels by Cuban writer Leonardo Padura, for which the author received literary awards in Germany, Spain, Austria, France and other countries. “Farewell Hemingway” ! - a story about Conde’s new investigation, the most unusual and, perhaps, the most important for him. In the Vigia estate, where Ernest Hemingway lived for decades and where the writer’s house-museum is now open, the remains of a man who, as an examination showed, were accidentally discovered forty years ago. And here's a strange coincidence: it was then, in October 1958, that Hemingway suddenly left Cuba, never to return to the island he loved so much. Trying to solve the mystery and find out who the murdered man was and who committed the murder, Mario Conde first of all seeks to understand what kind of person Hemingway really was, who combined so many contradictions, and whether this story became the first link in the chain of events that led writer to suicide.
