The pig-faced gwerfs fight fiercely with the hoplites, using crossbows, arquebuses, Kalash, and multi-petalled burlat in battle. Shots are heard from Vietnam and Kosovo, Baghdad and Urus-Martan; the clanging of magic blades is heard in the battle of Kalka and on the Kulikovo field. They fall, cut in two, furry, tailed, feathered. Everyone is fighting against everyone, everyone is in love with everyone. No one dies forever, because death, suffering and doubt have no place in the seething, motley, bizarre and changeable world that is organically inscribed in the skyscraper called Fantasy, the world that the great Roger Zelazny will leave us as a legacy.
