The writer Jyugo Kuroiwa’s very title of the book seems to reflect the state of the contemplator. The muteness in “Silent Women” evokes not only sympathy, but also, as it were, puts the heroines in a special category. Although these women are engaged in prostitution and violate the law, nevertheless, the writer’s attitude towards them is positive, filled with tender feelings, as towards beings of nature itself. The image of flowers and the sea completes the picture. The silence of the East has always been revered as a special virtue. Even among us, the proverb “The word is silver, silence is gold” remains in the memory of the people, although with a slightly different sign.
