This book is written about modern Jerusalem (and there are many purely Jerusalem details in it), but still speaking about the City. Denis Sobolev strives to say, first of all, something general about the existence of man in the modern world. There are seven narrators in the novel (according to the number of chapters). Each of them understands a lot, but a lot passes by, just like any of us; the reader will need a careful and slightly critical look. The style of their narratives varies depending on the forms of experience in question. In a vertical plan, the meaning of the book is revealed on several levels, which can be defined as psychological, historical, symbolic, cultural and mystical. In this sense, it is easy to draw a parallel between Sobolev’s book and traditional Jewish and Christian hermeneutics. However, the meaning of the novel is not on any of these levels. This meaning is revealed in their dialogue, mutual opposition and inseparability. The rest should be explained by the novel itself.
