The author of the book, Hans Schomburgk (1880-1967), made ten trips to the Dark Continent and saw it both at the end of the nineteenth century and in the second half of the twentieth. At first, he was, by his own admission, one of those adventurers who filled South Africa during the diamond and gold rush. Horse racing, a card game, small adventures in the “Golden City” - Johannesburg - interspersed in the life of young Schomburgk with hunting for elephants and other large animals that abounded in the wilds. Gradually, the tramp and hunter were attracted to the interesting and risky craft of an animal catcher. Later, Schomburgk turned into a hunter with a movie camera, a creator of films about the nature and people of Africa. He became a researcher who enriched science with knowledge about the nature and fauna of this continent.
