Count Savva Lukich Raguzinsky is undeservedly forgotten by our contemporaries. Meanwhile, he was one of the closest associates of Peter the Great: a diplomat, intelligence officer, economist, and talented entrepreneur who did a lot for Russia and for St. Petersburg in particular. His real name is Sava Vladislavich. An Orthodox Serb, born in 1660 (or 1668), at the end of the 17th century he and his family were forced to flee from the Turkish Janissaries to Dubrovnik (hence his pseudonym - Raguzinsky, because Dubrovnik at that time was called Ragusa). Having received an excellent education in Dubrovnik, Italy and France, he organized his own trading enterprise in Constantinople, and soon offered his services to the Russian embassy, providing it with the texts of secret treaties between Turkey and Western European countries...
