In The Global Connections of the Man Who Never Traveled, Dominik Sachsenmayer explores the spread of ideas in the rapidly globalizing world of the mid-17th century through the lens of the biography of Chinese Christian Zhu Zongyuan. Zhu most likely never left his home province. Yet he led a surprisingly busy global life, with a paradoxical list of activities ranging from scientific work to participation in the transnational activities of the Catholic Church. On the one hand, Sachsenmayer pays attention to the intellectual, political and social life of society at the end of the Ming and beginning of the Qing. On the other hand, he examines how individuals like Zhu found their place in the history of organizations and power structures of the early modern period against the backdrop of large-scale transformations and conflicts. The publishing layout of the book is preserved in PDF A4 format.
