Ian McEwan is one of the “ruling triumvirate” of modern British prose (along with Julian Barnes and Martin Amis), winner of the Booker Prize for his novel Amsterdam. His newest book, brought to your attention, was also included in the Booker shortlist last year. This is, as the critic puts it, “a poignant, albeit intimate, story about missed opportunities in the era before the sexual revolution.” The main events of the novel take place between Edward Mayhew and Florence Ponting on their wedding night, and the newlyweds are united only by the same inexperience: both remember their past lives and are afraid of the future.
The novel was published as a separate edition by the Eksmo publishing house in 2008 under the title “On the Shore” ".
