Alan Moorehead's book tells the story of one of the most significant operations of the First World War near the Turkish city of Gelibolu (Gallipoli). The interests of the great powers clashed for power over the Dardanelles, Bosporus and Constantinople: England and France, which were resisted by economically backward Turkey, exhausted in the Balkan wars, with the support of Germany. Due to contradictions among the allies, poor preparation, and the lack of a unified command, the Dardanelles operation did not achieve its goal. The Allied forces suffered huge losses. The author analyzes the causes of the defeat and draws general conclusions about its consequences.
