The famous writer and reporter Krzysztof Warga (b. 1968) is Polish on his mother’s side and Hungarian on his father’s side. This badass book about Hungary is written in Polish: not only in terms of language, but also in terms of style. She caustically ridicules national mythology and at the same time is full of melancholy, characteristic of stories about the places where she spent her childhood. Varga writes about the daily life of the Pest suburbs, street protests against the Gyurcsany government, about old trolleybuses, eateries and small restaurants dear to his heart that are unknown to tourists, about a trip with his old father from Warsaw to Budapest... Turul is, according to the author, “ a cross between an eagle and a goose,” the personification of “the Hungarian dream and Hungarian complexes.” But in the story about the complexes of a small country, its grotesque, imperial claims, not only Hungary is visible. This is a portrait of every society that lives by false ideas about itself.
