This book is a story about how people tried to survive in besieged Leningrad, what suffering they experienced, what price they paid to save their loved ones. Author, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Russian State Pedagogical University named after. A. I. Herzen and the European University in St. Petersburg, Sergei Viktorovich Yarov, based on hundreds of sources, including unpublished ones, recreates a picture of the daily life of Leningraders during the siege, which differs in many ways from what we knew before. Its details may stun readers with their cruelty, but it is impossible not to talk about them - only then will we be able to understand what it meant to remain human, to help others and to share a piece of bread in the “time of death.”
