Before you is a collection of articles and works by the famous Orthodox missionary, professor of theology, Deacon Andrei Kuraev. All of them are united by a topic that is relevant for our time: Christianity and cinema. There is a stereotype: modern cinema is categorically contraindicated for Orthodox people. And we can only talk about it from the standpoint of extreme negativism. Of course, this point of view is erroneous. In fact, a church person does not avoid modern art, including cinematography. It’s just that he often gives it a different assessment, sees it differently from the “mass viewer.” The work of Deacon Andrei Kuraev is an excellent example of how unexpectedly and non-linearly modern films are perceived by a Christian viewer. At the same time, the Orthodox worldview does not enslave the author: Kuraev is free in your interpretation. It does not pretend to be universal or to express a general church position. Art generally does not fit into one or another rigid scheme; there is no “single correct” opinion here. Therefore, we offer the reader this collection as subjective notes with which one can agree or argue.
