Scandinavian myths are a vivid example of living mythology: stories acquire new plot twists, images and details and are adapted over time, being preserved in various versions. These poetic and prose works, which originally existed in the oral tradition, are filled with many allusions and are extremely difficult to study, both in their original form and in translation. Tom Birkett set out to systematize the Scandinavian myths and retell them in accessible language, based on a solid scientific base. In addition to retelling the myths about the creation of the world, about the nine worlds and the World Tree Yggdrasil, about the most famous gods and goddesses (Odin, Frigg, Thor, Sif, Frey, Freya, Balder and others), about the giant Jotuns, about monsters, alves and gnomes, about the hero Sigurd and the Volsungs, descended from Odin, and about other legendary heroes, the book tells about the Viking exploration of the North Atlantic (about the settlement of Iceland and pioneers, about the discovery of Greenland by Erik the Red and Vinland by Leif Eriksson), about expeditions to the East and South (about travel in the Baltic, about connections with Russia, about Harald the Severe and Constantinople, about the caliphate), about the kings of the North (from the first king of Norway, Harald The fair-haired until the last Viking king Harald Hardrada). Of particular note is a review of sources on Norse mythology and the variety of interpretations of its motifs in art, literature, politics and popular culture, including video games (Skyrim and World of Warcraft), Japanese manga and Korean online role-playing games. The publication is superbly illustrated with engravings and color reproductions of masterpieces of world painting and graphics. The publishing design is preserved in PDF A4 format.
