Lauren Henderson, the brawler and “mean girl” of current British literature, essentially writes about herself. Her heroine Sam Jones also dyed her hair green in her youth and scoured London's garbage dumps in search of materials for her sculptures. But over time, Sam’s strange sculptures gained recognition, and she was offered to exhibit them in a New York gallery. Restless and cynical New York welcomes English artists with open arms, flowing margaritas and murder. The victim was found on Strawberry Field - sacred to fans of John Lennon. While New Yorkers gulp down antidepressants, mocktails and veggie pizza, and the Brits drink like cobblers, Sam Jones becomes embroiled in a wild tale in which Lennon, cocaine and modern art muddy the waters in equal measure. "Strawberry Tattoo" is a stylish detective story, but, in addition, it is also a declaration of love to Manhattan - with its roller skaters and preachers, drug dealers and vegetarians, with the winds over the steely waters of the bay and gloomy urbanism. Lauren Henderson, like no one else, knows how to combine the rigor of detective intrigue with the style of good literature and warm intonation with harsh sarcasm.
