The monograph is dedicated to one of the most tragic events of Byzantine history - the uprising that broke out in the capital of the empire - Constantinople - in January 532. This grandiose uprising went down in history under the name Nika (νίκα), which means “Conquer” - such was the cry of the rebels . Originating at the hippodrome as a protest against the willfulness of the emperor, the uprising was soon supported by the highest senatorial nobility, dissatisfied with the authoritarian policies of Justinian. The uprising and its significance are discussed in the book against the broad background of the socio-political and economic life of Constantinople, the largest city and center of the entire life of the empire. For all those interested in the history and culture of Byzantium.
